Welcome to Module 3 of "Scaling Technology & Teams” - The Product Model for CTOs. We've covered the technical foundations of scaling in Module 1 and how to build high-velocity engineering organizations in Module 2. Now, in Module 3, we're bridging the gap between technology and product strategy. This is where we learn how to build not just scalable systems, but successful products that customers love.
As CTOs, we're not just responsible for the technology; we're also responsible for ensuring that the technology we build delivers real value to the business and its customers. This module is all about understanding the modern product model and how to effectively collaborate with product and design teams to build high-impact products.
What's the Goal of This Module?
The goal of this module is to equip you with a deep understanding of modern product discovery and delivery practices. You'll learn how to foster a culture of empowered product teams, collaborate effectively with product managers and designers, and implement processes for continuous discovery and iterative development. This module will empower you to become a more strategic and influential leader, bridging the gap between technical execution and product vision.
What Will We Cover?
This module is divided into four key parts:
Part 1: The Foundations of Modern Product Discovery: We'll explore the shift from traditional roadmaps to continuous discovery and outcome-oriented product development. We'll discuss the four big risks (value, usability, feasibility, and business viability) and how to mitigate them. We’ll also cover product vision and strategy. This part lays the groundwork for understanding modern product thinking.
Part 2: Empowered Product Teams: This section dives into the dynamics of high-performing, empowered product teams. We'll discuss their characteristics, the roles and responsibilities within these teams (product manager, designer, tech lead), and how to build a culture of experimentation and learning. This part focuses on building the right teams to deliver great products.
Part 3: Product Discovery Techniques and Practices: Here, we'll get practical. We'll cover various techniques for conducting effective product discovery, including customer interviews, prototyping, A/B testing, and building Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). We will also discuss dual-track agile. This part equips you with the tools and methods to discover and validate product ideas.
Part 4: The CTO's Role in Product Success: This final part focuses specifically on your role as CTO in driving product success. We'll discuss how to collaborate effectively with product and design, ensure technical feasibility, balance innovation and technical debt, and contribute to product strategy and roadmap. This part clarifies your unique contribution to the product process.
What Are the Learning Objectives?
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
Understand the principles of modern product discovery and delivery.
Build and lead empowered product teams.
Effectively collaborate with product managers and designers.
Implement continuous discovery practices.
Contribute strategically to product vision and roadmap.
What to Expect:
This module is designed to be highly practical and relevant to your role as CTO. We'll use real-world examples and case studies to illustrate key concepts. You’ll gain actionable strategies and tools that you can implement immediately within your organization.
I'm confident that by the end of this module, you'll have a much clearer understanding of the product model and how to effectively contribute to building products that customers love. Let’s dive in!
